Wednesday January 18: Lane Cove Community Independent Critical of Narrabri Gas Project and Pipeline
Community independent candidate for Lane Cove, Victoria Davidson, today said she was disheartened to hear that NSW Treasurer Matt Kean has granted an Authority to Survey for the gas pipeline intended to connect the Narrabri Gas Project to the Hunter.
“By approving this project the NSW Government is duping the Lane Cove community which cares about meaningful climate action,” Victoria said.
“This project is not in the public interest and will not solve our short term energy issues.
“The Gomeroi people have now lodged their appeal against the Narrabri Gas Project decision which was handed down before Christmas in the National Native Title Tribunal. Until this appeal process is complete, there should be no activity by Santos on the pipeline.”
“This project does not have the support of the majority of Australians. It is completely inconsistent with our commitment under the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to as close to 1.5℃ as possible.”
This project involves 850 wells across agricultural land, in Pilliga Forest, along with a lateral pipeline.
“The project will have devastating impacts on biodiversity and water resources, and will accelerate climate change. It does not have the support of the local community, including traditional owners and farmers.”
“Emissions from this project are equivalent to almost an entire year of NSW’s total greenhouse gas emissions. How can our Government claim to be a leader on climate when this polluting project is being fast-tracked?” Victoria said.
“As the community independent candidate for Lane Cove, I'll be supporting an accelerated transition away from fossil fuels - it is not acceptable that Australia is one of the highest per capita CO2-e emitters in the world.”
